The consequences of the coronavirus crisis in Armenia are worse than initially predicted since the adoption of the necessary measures came late and the authorities showed that they weren’t serious and were in love with themselves. This is what member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun political party, economist Suren Parsyan said during a discussion evoted to social policy during the epidemic.

According to him, the country, economy and officials were absolutely unprepared for the crisis, and the government only responded to this or that consequence of the pandemic and didn’t take precautionary measures, and a lot has been said about this. “The government spent nearly AMD 150,000,000,000 through anti-crisis programs, but effectiveness was very low. Now Armenia is in a deep financial-economic crisis, and this first and foremost hits the middle class and the socially disadvantaged groups of the population, as well as small and medium-sized businesses. What also makes the situation more difficult is the fact that the authorities are giving wrong signals by stating the potential time limits for getting out of the crisis,” the economist stressed, adding that the Armenian government is acting with the “strong power-weak state” model, which creates serious problems for a country during crises.
