The ceremony of posthumously awarding the first chairman of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh) Supreme Council—former parliament—Artur Mkrtchyan and Artsakh Defense Army Captain Armenak Urfanyan with the highest title of Hero of Artsakh took place Saturday in Artsakh.

Artsakh President Arayik Haroutyunyan made a speech, noting that he had visited Artur Mkrtchyan's grave on the day of the presidential election and promised—if elected—to do his best to continue the work left unfinished by Mkrtchyan and to implement noble ideas.

"It was an oath in memory of Artur Mkrtchyan and all our brave sons who sacrificed their lives for the homeland. They took on a huge responsibility at a crucial and decisive moment for our people, standing at the forefront of building and defending the state, fully aware that the most precious thing, their own lives, is put on the sacrificial altar," Haroutyunyan said.

Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, accompanied by his wife Anna Hakobyan, as well as many other senior officials of Armenia and Artsakh were also present at the ceremony.
