According to Armenian News-NEWS.am, the Yerevan court of general jurisdiction, under the chairmanship of Judge Harutyun Manukyan, granted an investigator’s motion to select arrest as a pre-trial measure against footballer Edgar Malakyan.

After a short while, the court will also announce the decision on selecting a pre-trial measure for Edgar Malakyan’s brother, Gor Malakyan.

The footballer Malakyan brothers were released from a police precinct.

They told reporters, however, that at the moment they cannot say anything about the incident. "We want to thank everyone. To the [Football] Federation [of Armenia], and to other people who have expressed their support,” they said.

Referring to the incident with the police, the brothers noted: "You will all know about it in time (…). The traces [of this incident] are on us, which we will talk about later."

Asked whether they had hit the police during that incident, the Malakyans said no.

More than a dozen people had gathered in front of the aforesaid police precinct to meet the Malakyan brothers.

The investigator had petitioned the court to have them arrested as a pretrial measure. According to the Malakyans' lawyers, however, the examination into the pretrial measure is not over yet.

The footballer brothers are charged under the Criminal Code articles on using violence against a representative of the authorities and on committing hooliganism.

At around 11 p.m. on August 30, the 26- and 29-year-old footballer brothers had had an altercation with the police in downtown Yerevan.
