Commenting on Azerbaijan’s statements ascribed to Sergey Lavrov, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova has called on accepting as a basis Moscow’s position, not other commentaries.

“As far as the correctness to cite Russia’s foreign minister is concerned, I would like to draw your attention and address these questions to the sources from which this information was obtained,” Zakharova said.

As far as the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is concerned, according to Zakharova, the previously stated fundamental principles (solution to the issues related to the status of Nagorno-Karabakh and the liberation of territories surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh) were discussed during Lavrov’s meeting with the Azerbaijani side today.

Zakharova stressed that Russia’s position on this issue is very clear and asked to be guided by that position, not different commentaries.

Today the parliamentary delegation led by Chairperson of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova had a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov.

After the meeting, the National Assembly of Azerbaijan reported on its official website that the foreign minister of the Russian Federation had supposedly declared that “the statements of Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan on Nagorno-Karabakh hinder the settlement of the conflict.” The press release stated the following phrase ascribed to Lavrov: “This is the position of the official Moscow. In the process of settlement, the Russian side supports the return of the five seized regions, the deployment of peacekeepers in the territory and the restoration of the system of transport and communication.”
