YEREVAN. – Armenian community of Georgia, including the Armenians of Javakheti, has adopted neutral stance regarding political situation in Georgia, said Armenian MP and head of Javakhk union Shirak Torosyan.

Torosyan noted that representatives of the Armenian communities around the world usually support authorities under similar circumstances, but in this case Armenians preferred to maintain neutrality.

Armenian community can back the opposition, in case it gives promises to solve problems of Javakh Armenians, he told journalists.

The Georgian opposition has not given representatives of ethnic minorities any promises so far and has not called to be politically active.

“There are no guarantees that the promises would be honored. Saakashvili used to promise much when he was the opposition leader, but did not fulfill them,” Torosyan said adding that situation in Javakhk deteriorated under Saakashvili’s rule.

The MP also did not rule out that some Armenians can join the opposition, but this does not mean that the Armenian community of Georgia or Javakhk united with the opposition.

Javakhk (Georgian name – Javakheti) is an Armenian-populated part of Georgia’s southeastern Samtskhe-Javakheti province.
