YEREVAN. – Zhoghovurd daily of the Republic of Armenia (RA) writes: During the Azerbaijani aggression on the territory of Armenia, the role of the Collective Security Treaty Organization [(CSTO)] is constantly voiced, which must respond accordingly in case of aggression against its member country.

However, in addition to the obligations contained in the CSTO agreement, the Russian Federation also has obligations to Armenia under the Armenian-Russian agreement, within the framework of which the Russian 102nd Military Base is located in [Gyumri,] Armenia.

It was established in Armenia on September 1, 1994, based on the 127th Motorized Rifle Division of the Transcaucasian Military District. Protocol No. 5  on the extension of the 1995 Armenian-Russian agreement was signed during the state visit of [then] RF [Russian Federation] President Dmitry Medvedev to Armenia in August in 2010. According to the protocol, the Russian military base will be located in Gyumri until 2044.

In addition, according to the protocol, the domains of geographical and strategic responsibilities of the military base were expanding.

The Russian side assumed the obligation to jointly ensure the military security of Armenia and to assist the Armenian armed forces’ arming with modern weapons.

It turns out that in addition to the CSTO agreement, the Russian Federation also has other obligations to RA.
