Before the end of the battles, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh was critical, it was a matter of hours, it was impossible to hold negotiations within the scope of the OSCE Minsk Group. This is what President of Russia Vladimir Putin said, RIA Novosti reported.

In an interview with Rossia 24 TV, Putin informed that on 19-20 October there was almost an agreement reached to stop the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, but it was impossible to implement it at that time since the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan had taken Shushi under their control, after which Prime Minister Pashinyan justly and sincerely addressed his people and told them that the situation was critical for the Armenian party. Putin also said the cessation of fighting was in the interests of Yerevan.

“There was no time to prepare for additional consultations within the scope of the OSCE Minsk Group. It was simply unrealistic, and it was necessary to take actions based on the realities on the battlefield. Russia did just that, based on the interests of the Armenians and Azerbaijanis,” he said, adding that Armenia would have committed suicide, if it refused to sign the agreement over Nagorno-Karabakh.
