The Scottish Parliament passed a law on the compulsory provision of hygiene products to women, the first in the world to legislate the right of women to receive tampons and pads for free, RIA Novosti reported.

The bill has been passed unanimously by members of parliament today.

First Minister of the region Nicola Sturgeon tweeted that Scotland was the first in the world to pass such a law, which provides access to hygiene products for all who need them.

The bill was presented by MP Monica Lennon to fight poverty.
