Lars Patrick Berg, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), is planning to raise at the European Parliament the matter of Azerbaijan’s use of Syrian mercenaries in the recent Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) war, and some other matters.

The MEP held a video call with Armenian MP Viktor Yengibaryan to discuss the situation on the ground in Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia, Armenpress reported. Berg said they discussed several matters concerning the aforesaid war.

“I will address these issues in the European Parliament, especially the involvement of Syrian mercenaries by Azerbaijan in the war. We talked about the use of the internationally banned cluster munitions, for which there are multiple evidences, and the need for the international community to launch an investigation into this. We also agreed that all war crimes must be scrutinized, especially the ill-treatment against Armenian prisoners of war,” the MEP said.

On November 9, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a joint statement on a complete cessation of hostilities— which Azerbaijan had launched on September 27—in and around Artsakh. Accordingly, Russian peacekeepers are deployed in the region to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire and the cessation of hostilities.
