YEREVAN. – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Ara Aivazian, on Wednesday had a telephone conversation with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, reported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia.

They discussed the humanitarian situation in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) as a result of the recent Turkish-Azerbaijani military aggression and its consequences for the region. Reference was made to the humanitarian crisis and the steps being taken to address it. In this regard, Minister Aivazian especially emphasized the importance of the engagement of international organizations and, first of all, of the relevant UN bodies.

During the telephone conversation, the Armenian FM stressed also the necessity of ensuring the conditions for the repatriation of the displaced Artsakh Armenians and the steps aimed at protecting their rights. Minister Aivazian provided Secretary General Guterres with comprehensive information on torture and other acts of violence against Armenian POWs and civilians who are now under Azerbaijani control.

Both sides emphasized the strict observance of the norms of international humanitarian law and human rights, and the respectful attitude towards the historical and cultural heritage of Artsakh.
