Volkswagen faces over € 100 million in fines for failing to meet the EU's 2020 carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions targets, the company said.

The company has cut average CO2 emissions in the EU by about 20% to 99.8 g / km, but this is about 0.5 g / km above the target.

European politicians have limited exhaust emissions, forcing automakers to stimulate the development of low-emission technologies or face a € 95 fine per gram of excess CO2 emissions.

Volkswagen is cutting back on vehicles with combustion engines.
