Azerbaijan has started construction of a new motorway leading to the David Gareja Monastery.

Of course, in the Azerbaijani media, which report on the start of construction, there is no word about the real name of this monastery, and it is referred to as the Keshikchidag Reserve.

Georgia and Azerbaijan are disputing the territorial affiliation of the David Gareja Monastery, and there have even been several respective incidents in the past.

At present, an unregulated part of the Georgian-Azerbaijani border passes through this monastery.

Negotiations have been held many times between the two countries on the demarcation of this part of the border and, accordingly, the fate of this historical monument, but so far these talks have not yielded any results. This, however, does not prevent the Azerbaijani side from considering this monastery "theirs," establishing a border checkpoint there, and starting the construction of a new motorway leading to it.
