There are quite a lot of active seismogenic faults mapped in the territory of Armenia. This is what Chief Advisor to the director of the Seismic Protection Territorial Service SNCO Hrachya Petrosyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Petrosyan stated that there are about ten seismogenic faults.

“Among the most active seismic faults is the active Pambak-Sevan fault. Throughout history, there have been earthquakes with varying magnitudes often and more powerful earthquakes than the Magnitude 5 earthquake in Shorzha and earthquake with Magnitude 6-7. Thus, it would be wrong to talk about the emergence of a new hotbed and new seismogenic fault. There were 100 seismic shocks after the earthquake, and so, the number is constantly changing,” he said.

According to Hrachya Petrosyan, the medium-intensity shocks ease the tensions accumulating in the earth’s crust. Petrosyan stated that according to existing data, the aftershocks may continue. “There may be and there are weak shocks in Armenia and nearby areas. There have been weak shocks in Armenia, Georgia and Turkey yesterday and today, but there is no monitoring data on a possible powerful earthquake. If there are such data, the Service will inform the population and government through the accepted procedure.”
