Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia announced his resignation amid the political crisis in the country.

"I believe and want to believe that this step will help reduce the polarization in our country," he said.

The prime minister noted that the reason for the resignation was also the disagreement with the ruling party over the execution of the court's decision to place United National Movement chair Nika Melia in custody.

Nika Melia is charged with incitement to violence during the June protests in Tbilisi back in 2019 which were sparked by the presence of Russian MPs in the Georgian parliament.
