TikTok parent company ByteDance has agreed to pay $ 92 million to settle a class-action lawsuit from American users who claim the video-sharing app did not get their consent to collect data in violation of Illinois' strict privacy law, AP reported.

The federal lawsuit alleged that TikTok violated Illinois' biometric privacy law, which allows lawsuits to be brought against companies that collect consumer data without their consent, including through face scans and fingerprints. Illinois is the only state with a law that allows people to claim financial compensation for such unauthorized data collection.

Facebook agreed to pay out $ 550 million under the same law last February. A TikTok settlement must be approved by a federal judge.
