Iran's second COVID-19 vaccine has been tested on humans in Iran. Human trials of the COV-Pars vaccine began Sunday morning with an injection in two volunteers at Tehran hospital, Mehr reports.

It is the second Iranian vaccine to be tested in humans after the COVIRAN vaccine made headlines as the first viable Iranian-made coronavirus vaccine last month.

Developed by the Vaccine and Serum Research Institute, COV-Pars is an inhaled vaccine. It uses recombinant versions of a spike protein that trains the immune system against the virus.

COV-Pars is being introduced in three phases; two intramuscular injections 21 days apart and intranasal administration 30 days after the second injection.

The developers say that this not only protects against the virus, but also prevents transmission of the virus to other people. Simply put, those receiving the COV-Pars vaccine will not need a mask.
