The UN humanitarian agency has warned that more than 16 million people in Yemen will go hungry this year, and already about half a million people in the war-torn country are living on the brink of starvation.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the danger of large-scale famine in the poorest country in the Arab world "has never been more acute," adding that years of conflict, economic downturn and institutional collapse have created huge humanitarian needs across all sectors.

The warning came the day before a pledging conference hosted by Sweden and Switzerland. UN Secretary-General António Guterres will request $ 3.85 billion in aid to Yemen this year.
