During today’s Yerevan-Moscow teleconference, Russian political scientist Sergey Markedonov said Russia is following the situation in Armenia.

“Even though Russia understands that Armenia is a key partner and ally, it also understands that it can’t interfere in the country’s domestic affairs. Since there are strategic issues, Moscow will work with Armenia, regardless of who represents the country. However, the longer the crisis goes on, there will be suspicions about fulfillment of the agreements on the part of Armenia,” he said and expressed certainty that even if there aren’t enough suspicions, there will be people who will escalate the situation.

“In order to deal with the economic issues, the situation in Armenia needs to be stabilized. Russia is trying to propose a constructive plan and add the economic component to the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” the analyst emphasized and added that the unblocking of the transport corridor is an attempt to add to the agenda. “You have the Eurasian Economic Union and Armenian-Russian relations, but as far as the multilateral agenda is concerned, the question is how Iran can establish ties with Russia. Thus, Armenia serves as a bridge within the scope of the Eurasian Economic Union,” he concluded.
