Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a videoconference on Friday to discuss bilateral ties and regional issues, Ahval reported.

During the online meeting, Erdogan confirmed the need to support the European Union in overcoming the crisis with Syrian refugees, according to an official statement from the president's office.

Erdogan has repeatedly threatened to open his country's European borders to nearly 4 million Syrian refugees living in Turkey, briefly putting this into practice last year, leading to chaotic scenes at checkpoints, the resource notes.

The leaders of the two countries also discussed tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Seas with EU members Greece and Cyprus over maritime borders and access to natural gas reserves.

The EU recently imposed sanctions on Turkish organizations involved in drilling operations in the disputed waters.

But Erdogan said Turkey continues to demonstrate a constructive position on the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean, the official statement said.
