Turkish police have detained 13 people for insulting Erdogan on International Women's Day, AP reported.

Thousands took part in a rally in central Istanbul to condemn violence against women in Turkey, where more than 400 women were killed last year. Unlike in previous years, when similar demonstrations were dispersed by the police, the march took place without incident.

However, the police later checked the video recordings of the demonstration and detained 13 people, including a minor, who participated in the protest.

Turkish media reported that the suspects were detained for questioning over slogans that were deemed offensive to Erdogan.

Insulting the president is a crime in Turkey, punishable by up to four years in prison. Thousands of people, including journalists, politicians, actors, and schoolchildren, have been prosecuted for allegedly insulting Erdogan.

The arrests came despite Erdogan's pledge last week to reform human rights, including freedom of speech.
