The French Foreign Ministry summoned the Chinese ambassador to emphasize the unacceptable nature of insults and threats against French lawmakers, as well as Beijing's decision to impose sanctions on some European officials.

According to Reuters, Chinese Ambassador to France Lu Shaye was already summoned to the Foreign Ministry in April last year because of posts and tweets from the embassy, in which he defended Beijing's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and criticized the actions of the West.

The Chinese embassy last week warned French lawmakers against meeting with officials during an upcoming visit to Taiwan.

After that, a post of the PRC embassy appeared on Twitter addressed to an expert on China from the Paris-based Strategic Research Foundation Antoine Bondaz, in which the embassy described him as a petty thug and a rabid hyena.

This is unacceptable and oversteps the borders for a foreign embassy, the French official said after the Chinese diplomat was received by the head of the Asian department of the foreign ministry.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the ambassador's behavior poses an obstacle to improving relations between China and France.

On the eve of the United States, the European Union, Britain and Canada imposed sanctions against Chinese officials for human rights violations in Xinjiang.

In response, China's foreign ministry has imposed sanctions on several European citizens, including French member of the European Parliament, Rafael Glucksmann.
