The decision of the Constitutional Court will concern not only second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan. It will either affirm or ultimately destroy the foundations of rule of law. This is what Robert Kocharyan’s attorney Sevak Torosyan told reporters at Hayeli Press Club today.

According to him, the Constitutional Court might also render a decision that will delay consideration of the issue for, say, six months until it becomes clear who the head of state will be. “One thing is for sure – there shouldn’t be revenge after shift of power. On the contrary, it is necessary to help judges become independent. I believe independence of the judiciary plays a tremendous role in small states,” the attorney stressed, adding that fair courts are the light at the end of the tunnel for Armenia, but it’s still dark in the tunnel.

The attorney recalled that if the Constitutional Court declares Article 300.1 of the Criminal Code contradicting to the Constitution, the case of Kocharyan and other ex-officials may be dismissed. As far as the statements that Robert Kocharyan was detained in order for the government to hand over Artsakh more easily, Torosyan declared that the orders for detention are issued by the authorities, evidence of which are the audio recordings of top officials’ phone conversations and the recent sensational incident linked to Advisor to the Prime Minister Anna Vardapetyan.
