The National Assembly of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) today held its regular plenary session during which, among other issues, the new Human Rights Defender was elected.

The “Democratic Party of Artsakh” faction of the National Assembly nominated Chief of Staff of the Office of the Human Rights Defender Gegham Stepanyan for the position of Human Rights Defender, and Stepanyan was elected with 22 votes “in favor” and 8 votes “against”.

Talking about his future actions, Stepanyan set aside two main areas of activities, including observance of human rights and freedoms under the Constitution and laws of Artsakh and cooperation with the Office of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia, Armenian organizations and institutions of the Diaspora, international organizations and human rights organizations.
