Human Rights Defender of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) today participated in the online conference entitled “Situation in Nagorno-Karabakh: Prisoners of War and Risks Posing a Threat to the Armenian Population” and hosted by the European Parliament’s Parliamentary Friendship Group with Artsakh.

In his speech, Stepanyan presented the inhuman treatment, tortures, disfigurations and murders shown and committed by Azerbaijani Armed Forces towards Armenian prisoners of war and captured civilians during and after the 44-day war and emphasized that there is a threat to the life and health of all captured persons being illegally kept in Azerbaijan, adding that their immediate return to Armenia is necessary.

Talking about the international community’s actions, the Ombudsman attached importance to the need to exert pressure on Azerbaijan and stated that this will help force Azerbaijan to fulfill the international commitments that it has assumed and return the Armenian captives.

Stepanyan also called on his partners of the European Parliament to continue the fight for protection of the rights of the people of Artsakh at the level of their respective states and across Europe.

The post-war humanitarian situation and the issues and threats facing the people of Artsakh were also discussed during the conference.
