Russia could become a mediator in the discussion of the matter of border demarcation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a joint news conference with his Tajik counterpart, RIA Novosti reported.

"We [Russia], in turn, have informed our friends in detail about the efforts the Russian Federation is making to resolve the incident [on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border], which arose due to the lack of an international legal framework on the state border," Lavrov said. "According to the preliminary agreement between the parties [Armenia and Azerbaijan], the Russian Federation has offered to assist in the beginning and implementation of the delimitation and demarcation of the border, making—in this regard—an initiative to establish a joint Armenian-Azerbaijani commission, in which Russia can participate as an advisor—a mediator, if you will."
