Council of Europe (CoE) Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic Buric has responded to Armenian President Armen Sarkissian's letter on the need for the immediate return of all Armenian POWs and civilians held by Azerbaijan.

The CoE head noted that they continue to closely monitor the humanitarian and human rights situation in and around Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), and, for its part, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has expressed concern over reports that not all detainees have been exchanged in the context of the 2020 conflict.

Pejcinovic Buric added that the PACE Migration Committee is preparing a report on the humanitarian consequences of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In her reply letter, she assured that the CoE will do everything possible within its mandate to assist the two member countries in achieving lasting peace and prosperity in the region, and will use every opportunity to voice humanitarian and human rights issues.
