During a meeting with EU leaders, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said the EU will suspend and freeze the EUR 3,000,000,000 investment package for Belarus so long as the country hasn’t become democratic, Reuters reports.

Leyen added that the EU will repress the Belarusian administration until it finally starts respecting the mass media, freedom of the press and freedom of expression.

According to her, the new measures will be targeted against those who were involved in the emergency landing of the Ryanair plane and in companies and economic entities that provide funding for the country’s leadership and Belarus’s aviation sector. The president of the European Commission added that Lukashenko and his regime need to understand that this will entail serious consequences.
