Australia is closing its embassy in Kabul for security reasons ahead of the final withdrawal of US and NATO troops, AP reported.

A number of other embassies in the Afghan capital sent non-essential personnel home, warned their citizens not to visit Afghanistan, and urged those already in the country to consider leaving.

Several embassies contacted by the Associated Press declined to provide details of their plans, but many have cut back on non-essential personnel. Including the US Embassy.

The last of the 2,500-3,500 US troops and 7,000 NATO allies will leave by 9/11, raising fears that their withdrawal could exacerbate chaos in Kabul.

The embassies in the Afghan capital are located in the so-called Green Zone, which is considered the most secure.

Afghanistan's MFA said on Tuesday that it is committed to providing security for the embassies. But there is widespread concern about the government's ability to provide such protection in a city ravaged by lawlessness, criminal gangs and insurgency.
