YEREVAN. – We expect that our allies, who are connected with us through clearly regulated mutual obligations, including military, will support us in this process. Ruben Rubinyan, chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations and a member of the majority My Step faction of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia, on Wednesday told this to reporters in the NA, referring to the current situation at the border with Azerbaijan.

"First of all, we [Armenia] are trying to resolve the issue through diplomacy; but this does not mean that if it does not happen, there will be no other solutions—including military," he added.

According to the MP, views are expressed in Armenia—particularly from the opposition—why the country’s allies should help in border issues, if, for example, the Armenian side does not fire. In this context, as per Rubinyan, it was the allies of Armenia who called not to aggravate the situation and to try to solve this problem through diplomatic and political means.

"Our allied formats in which we are involved have clear articles on specific cases. We have applied on the basis of clear documents, with a clear article. Moreover, under Article 2 of the CSTO treaty and on the basis of the Armenian-Russian bilateral agreement, we expect the allies to help us. I do not rule out, also taking into account the recent events, that we will also reach Article 4," Rubinyan added.

To the remark that the Azerbaijanis are doing what they want at the border, whereas the defeated Armenian authorities are unable to do anything, the My Step MP countered, emphasizing that it is not like as if the enemy does what is wants. "Naturally, what has happened by the enemy is inadmissible, as they have invaded an internationally recognized territory. There is a problem, the current status quo is unacceptable for us, but the operative situation in those areas is under the control of our soldiers; we need to be careful with the wording," Ruben Rubinyan stressed.
