A European Union lawyer accused AstraZeneca of not fulfilling a contract for the supply of vaccines against COVID-19 and asked a Belgian court to impose a large fine on the company, Reuters reports.

The EU sued the Anglo-Swedish firm in April after the drugmaker said it intends to supply only 100 million doses of the vaccine by the end of June, instead of the 300 million stipulated in the contract.

Brussels wants the company to ship at least 120 million vaccines by the end of June. In early May, AstraZeneca delivered 50 million doses. AstraZeneca didn’t even try to uphold the contract, EU lawyer Rafael Jafferali told a Brussels court at the first hearing on the merits of the case.

He said the EU is demanding € 10 for each day of delay for each dose as compensation for AstraZeneca's failure to comply with the terms of the EU contract. This fine will apply from July 1, 2021, if approved by a judge.

Jafferali said the EU is demanding an additional fine of at least € 10 million for each breach of contract.
