Instagram launches the ability for users around the world to hide the number of likes under posts. This change will soon be rolling out to Facebook after years of testing to reduce the load on their services.

Instagram users will be able to hide likes for all posts in their feed and on their posts. Both options will be available on Facebook in the next few weeks, says the Instagram blog.

Speaking to reporters, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the goal is to empower people to manage their experience on the app. He said that tests of the platform to hide counts did not show much change in the psychological well-being of users, but polarized the opinion of users. Mosseri noted that he did not expect to see significant changes in user engagement after this move.
