On May 27, the Yerevan court of general jurisdiction rendered a decision on the conditional early release of Vardan Sedrakyan, who was convicted of attempting to assassinate leader of the Union for National Self-Determination Party Paruyr Hayrikyan eight years ago. The news was confirmed by Head of the Public Relations Department of the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice of Armenia Nona Navikyan.

On January 31, 2013 at 11:20 p.m. Sedrakyan had attempted to assassinate former presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan near his house, and in September 2013, he was sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 14 years.

Khachatur Poghosyan and Samvel Harutyunyan were detained on suspicion of attempting to assassinate Hayrikyan, and they had previously been convicted of illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs. Both gave confessional testimonies. Poghosyan and Harutyunyan were also sentenced to 14 years and 12 years in prison, respectively.
