If a soldier honors a Member of Parliament who was sentenced for desertion, defeat in the war is inevitable. Robert Kocharyan—second President of Armenia, leader of “Armenia” bloc which is running in the snap parliamentary elections set for June 20 and the bloc’s candidate for premier—said this during a campaign meeting with residents of Gavar.

“The MPs have many leverages for influence, including influence on Armenian Public Television. There has never been a period when Armenian Public Television has caused harm to national values,” Kocharyan said.

Getting back to the topic of leverages for influence, the former President mentioned the behavior of certain figures ‘chosen by the people’. “I almost fell off the chair when I saw soldiers greeting a person sentenced for desertion. This would definitely lead to defeat,” Kocharyan said.

Although Kocharyan fell short of mentioning the name of the MP, it is assumed that the MP is Arman Babajanyan, who was sentenced for avoiding military service and falsifying documents.
