Former Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio died in Lisbon aged 82, the Efe news agency reported.

Two weeks ago, he was hospitalized with breathing problems and had longstanding heart problems.

Sampaio was born in Lisbon in 1939 and served as president from 1996 to 2006.

During the years of his political career, which began in the early years of democracy in the 1970s, he served as head of the Socialist Party (1989-1991) and mayor of Lisbon (1989-1995).
