Prominent physicist, academic director of G. N. Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions Yuri Hovhannisyan has become one of the first two recipients of the UNESCO-Russia D. I. Mendeleev International Prize in the Field of Fundamental Sciences for his achievements in the field of fundamental sciences.

The solemn award ceremony will be held on Nov. 15 at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, Secretary of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO Grigory Ordjonikidze reported.

“Yuri Hovhannisyan is the only living scientist in whose honor an element has been named on the Periodic Table of Elements. It is the 118th element, and it is called “oganeson”,” Ordjonikidze added.
