Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov explained why Azerbaijan chose to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict militarily.

According to APA, Bayramov stated that “the opposite side chose the path of aggression and military provocations against our people and state, from the dimension of blockage and artificial delay of the political process”.

“This obviously was the last straw for Azerbaijan, if we can refer to it as such. In accordance with the Constitution of Azerbaijan and the United Nations Charter and all the requirements of international humanitarian law, Azerbaijan launched an operation for counterattack. As a result of the 44-year [it should be 44-day] Patriotic War, our 7 regions, the city of Shushi, including our nine cities and hundreds of settlements were liberated from occupation. Azerbaijan restored its borders specified in international documents, that is, the Armenian-Azerbaijani and Iranian-Azerbaijani borders,” he said.

The sincerity of the Azerbaijani minister, who publicly accepted the fact of aggression which he refers to as “an operation for counterattack”, is unprecedented. With this, Bayramov admitted that Azerbaijan has violated all the possible and impossible norms of international law by committing an act of aggression against the peaceful civilians of Nagorno-Karabakh. At the same time, the Azerbaijani minister is insincere when he talks about “the restoration of the borders specified in international documents”. Since it is not the legal successor of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan has no legal ground to have pretensions for the borders of Azerbaijan.
