Bulgaria will switch to the single European currency from January 1, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Assen Vassilev said this on Friday, answering questions from parliament members, TASS reports.

Currently, the country technically is fully prepared for the introduction of the euro, there are only some small tasks that remain to be completed, so the date of January 1, 2024 is not in doubt. The question is that it is necessary to conduct an explanatory campaign so that everyone can understand what the transition to the euro means, Vassilev noted.

Five months before the introduction of the euro and a year after it, prices in stores will be indicated in Bulgarian lev and euros. One month after joining the eurozone, it will be possible to pay in both euros and lev. For six months, the exchange of levs for euros will be free of charge. The exchange rate of the Bulgarian lev will remain unchanged at 1.95583 lev per euro.
