YEREVAN. – The data on the number of our unit in Kazakhstan have been publicized, and it is clearly noted what function they are performing [there]; that is, the function of protecting the key facilities. Deputy defense minister Arman Sargsyan on Tuesday told this to reporters in the National Assembly of Armenia.

To the remark that the Armenian opposition considers it risky to send an Armenian military unit to Kazakhstan when Armenia's borders are in this state, Sargsyan responded as follows: "The oppositionists can present their observations in that logic. But there is no risk issue in this because our number [in Kazakhstan] is not such that the absence of those 100 servicemen assume any change in terms of border tension.

If we follow the criticisms, we are in a very sad situation—which is not the case. There is no need to see the bad in every good. Criticism must be objective, from which the authorities will only learn lessons and try to do a better job."

To the question whether there are specific timeframes to withdraw the Armenian military unit from Kazakhstan, the deputy defense minister said: "I cannot note a date. But it was noted also when sending [this unit] that they are going for a limited time."

Arman Sargsyan, however, left unanswered the question as to what the logic is when the Russians are brought to Armenia's borders, whereas the Armenian soldiers are sent to help the Kazakhs.
