North Korea has warned it will have to show a stronger and more determined response after the US imposed new sanctions on Pyongyang.

If the United States continues to take such a confrontational stance, North Korea will be forced to demonstrate a stronger and more definite reaction to this, the North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement, Interfax reports.

According to him, the recent launches of hypersonic missiles were an exercise of the right to self-defense.

North Korea's recent development of a new type of weapon was only part of its efforts to modernize its national defense capabilities, the statement said.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman called the US actions an obvious provocation and accused Washington of deliberately escalating the situation. This shows that while the current US administration trumpets diplomacy and dialogue, it is still consumed by its policy of isolating and suppressing North Korea, the statement said.

Meanwhile, the US has urged North Korea to refrain from further provocations and engage in dialogue instead.

On January 12, the US Treasury imposed restrictive measures against the Moscow-registered company Parsec and against seven individuals associated with North Korea.

The move comes after Pyongyang launched on Tuesday what it claims is a newly developed hypersonic missile. This is the second such test in less than a week.
