In 2024 Georgia intends to complete the project of Kvesheti-Kobi bypass of the most difficult and dangerous section of Kobi-Gudauri highway Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi, said the head of Georgian Highways Department Giorgi Tsereteli in an interview with Forbes Infrastructure.

It is planned to build 22.7 kilometers of road, as well as six bridges and five tunnels, including a nine-kilometer tunnel.

The project is considered one of the most complex engineering structures in Europe.

Work on the construction of the 9-kilometer tunnel began in September 2021. As Tsereteli said, the project is implemented as part of the North-South corridor.

A 2,200-meter evacuation tunnel has been dug, and work on the 23-kilometer access road is actively underway. The current project will be completed in 2024.

The road and the tunnel itself are being built to bypass the most difficult section, which is usually closed due to the danger of avalanches.
