Mexican Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (COFEPRIS) authorized Pfizer's Paxlovid treatment for emergency use, as reported by the Mexican regulator on its official website on Friday (local time), TeleTrader reported.

According to the press release, the drug, which combines nirmatrelvir and ritonavir in a tablet, will be used to treat adult patients with mild or moderate COVID-19 symptoms and with the risk of complications.

The head of COFEPRIS, Alejandro Svarch Perez, explained that this approval represents a new tool in the strategy to combat COVID-19.

"This treatment will be crucial to reduce hospitalizations in Mexico, so we are pleased to be the first country in Latin America to authorize its emergency use," added Perez.
