Former Republican Senator Jeff Flake has officially become U.S. ambassador to Turkey after presenting his credentials to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Reuters reported.

Flake arrived in Ankara earlier this month to succeed David Satterfield, who is now U.S. special envoy to the Horn of Africa.

Relations between Washington and Ankara have strained over the past few years over such issues as Turkey's purchase of Russian S-400 systems, court and civil rights cases, and political disagreements in Syria and the eastern Mediterranean.

After Trump and Erdogan developed a warm personal relationship, President Joe Biden became cooler to Turkey. One of his first moves in the White House was to recognize the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

However, the countries are trying to put aside differences and are negotiating conflicts in Libya, Ethiopia and Afghanistan, where Turkey is discussing the possibility of operating Kabul International Airport with Qatar.
