The UK is investing £1.4bn to increase the number of British satellites in space as part of its first space defense strategy.

Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said it was essential for the UK to push the boundaries of defense space ambition to stay one step ahead of the competition.

The Department of Defense has announced that £968 million of public investment will be made over the next 10 years to build a multi-satellite system, known as the Istari programme, to support larger global surveillance and intelligence for military operations.

Another £61 million will be used to explore advanced laser communications technologies to deliver data from space to Earth at speeds equivalent to ultra-fast broadband.

The Defense Space Strategy follows the National Space Strategy, which was released in September.

The DoD document outlines how it plans to protect the UK's national interests in space in an era of ever-increasing threats.
