For the first time since seizing power in Afghanistan, the radical Islamist Taliban announced the appointment of women to leadership positions in the country, said Zabihullah Mujahid, Deputy Minister of Information and Culture in the interim Afghan government formed by the Taliban, Deutsche Welle reports.

According to published information, by order of the head of the interim cabinet, Dr. Malalai Rahim was appointed director of the specialized maternity hospital in Kabul - the only obstetric and gynecological institution of its kind in the whole country.

Another woman, Dr. Aryan, at the suggestion of the Ministry of Higher Education and with the approval of the Prime Minister in the interim government, was appointed director of a gynecological clinic in the Shahrar quarter of the capital.

These appointments were the result of a number of meetings between the Taliban and representatives of international organizations, during which, among other things, issues related to the participation of women in the public and political life of Afghanistan were raised. In addition, this country has one of the highest birth death rates in the world, and this problem needs to be addressed urgently.
