The opposition "Armenia" Faction of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia has proposes to set up a new NA inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances of the 44-day Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) war in the fall of 2020.

The faction has put into circulation a package on this committee and the attached draft laws.

To note, NA Inquiry Committee for Studying the Circumstances of the Hostilities Unleashed on September 27, 2020 was set up on February 10—and at the request of the MPs of the ruling majority "Civil Contract" Faction. However, the opposition "Armenia" and "With Honor" Factions of the NA do not participate in its work, arguing that in the conditions of the parliamentary system of government, the setting up of NA inquiry committees is one of the main tools of the opposition forces because the authorities cannot objectively investigate their own actions.

According to the proposal of the "Armenia" Faction, the new NA committee of inquiry investigating the circumstances of the 44-day war shall be an autonomous body.

"The new committee of inquiry into the circumstances of the war is much more comprehensive—in terms of the issues raised—than the one created at the request of the authorities. The status, composition of the new committee of inquiry is radically different from the already established committee," Gegham Manukyan, an MP of the "Armenia" Faction, told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

The "Armenia" Faction proposes that the new NA committee of inquiry investigating the circumstances of the 44-day war be independent of state and local government agencies, officials, individuals, and legal entities.
