A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.3 occurred near the northeastern coast of Japan's main island of Honshu, a tsunami threat has been declared, TASS reported with reference to the national meteorological department.

The epicenter of the earthquake was near the coast of Fukushima prefecture, the source was located at a depth of about 60 km under the ocean floor. The prefectures of Fukushima and Miyagi were forecasting tsunamis up to 1 meter high. Strong shakes, which lasted about a minute, were felt in Tokyo, walls in houses were shaking violently and small objects fell from shelves.

The office of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida set up an emergency office to collect information. A few minutes after the first tremor a warning system went off to warn of another possible earthquake, but it did not happen.

No serious damage or casualties are reported at this time.
