US Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks believes that Sweden and Finland will be able to negotiate with Turkey on their membership in NATO.

“[We are] confident that Finland and Sweden will be able to resolve those [concerns] with the Turks directly,” Hicks said during a meeting with Norwegian Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Graham in Oslo, Reuters quoted her as saying.

Finland and Sweden, against the backdrop of events in Ukraine, handed over to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg applications to join the alliance.

The Financial Times newspaper wrote that Turkey blocked the start of the process of consideration of the application for the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara cannot say "yes" to the membership of Finland and Sweden in the alliance, because it cannot believe their assurances about relations with representatives of the Kurdish Workers' Party, banned in Turkey.
