Germany on Thursday activated the second phase of its three-phase emergency plan for natural gas supplies, warning that Europe's largest economy is facing a "crisis" and winter storage targets are in jeopardy after Russia cut energy supplies to several countries, AP reported.

The government said the decision comes after Russia cut its natural gas supplies last week and a spike in energy prices caused by the conflict in Ukraine. Industrial consumers are being asked to reduce the amount of natural gas they use, and Germany and other countries are returning to using coal as a substitute, threatening climate goals in Europe amid escalating energy tensions between Russia and the West.

“Even if we don't feel it yet, we are in a gas crisis," Economy Minister Habeck said.
