YEREVAN. – On June 20, officers from the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia  found 3,025.76 grams of opium hidden in a cardboard box that was given to HayPost—the national postal operator—by Iranian citizen B. Z., and to be sent to Australia, Armenian News-NEWS.am has learned from the NSS.

In the framework of the respective criminal case opened on the same day, B. Z. was found at the Meghri checkpoint on the Armenian-Iranian border and detained.

It was found out that this Iranian national had reached a preliminary agreement with another Iranian citizen, attempted to smuggle the aforesaid opium out of Armenia, but this crime was not brought to fruition, as it was discovered by the officers of the NSS of Armenia.

B. Z. has been charged and remanded in custody.

The criminal investigation continues.
