The Instagram developers have launched a feature for scanning faces to determine the age of users, Business Insider reports. So far, the new feature is limited to the United States.

The innovation is aimed at users who want to change their age in the application to 18 years and older. There are three ways to verify the age of majority - upload a photo of your ID, ask three friends to verify their age, or record a video selfie.

In the event that the user chooses the latter method, Instagram hands over the video to London-based startup Yoti, whose algorithms will scan facial features to determine age. In addition, Instagram will use the received data for its recommendations so that the user receives content according to his age restrictions.

Yoti and Instagram do not plan to store user data and will delete them as soon as they confirm the user's age. For example, if a user submits a passport photo, the image will be deleted after 30 days.
